The concept of Zuhd always seemed strange to me.
I couldn’t understand how it is expected to live like a monk.
But the general attitude of Muslims is defined by independence on things/persons and dependence on Allah.
One poet, Akbar Allahabadi writes aptly- “Duniya me hun, Duniya ka talabgaar nahi hun. Bazaar se guzra hun, khareedar nahi hun”.
This is the general attitude of Muslims which we should have.
It gives immense strength and high self esteem.
It frees us from so many things including materialistic aspects and want of loving people in our lives.
When anyways we are not talabgaar of love or lust of this world, not interested in the best things/men/children/job/property in the bazaar.
Its just that we are passing through the market so we meet many people and see many scenes and use many things.
We do get attached to them definitely.
But the desire of them doesn’t madden us or get us obsessed.
And that is how it is preferred we live in this world.
And so that we are happy in our situations.
We can then actually understand whatever we have is just extra gifts from God.
He doesn’t owe us anything, to give any of them to us.
That’s also what is meant to tie our camel, which we should continue to do.
But have trust in Allah.
And gratitude to Allah.
Because we understand not being dependent on the camel is the main thing,
But depending on our trust in Allah is actual zuhd.
